Timetabling Redesign (TTR)

RailNetEurope (RNE) and Forum Train Europe (FTE), supported by the European Rail Freight Association (ERFA), are currently working on an overhaul of the international timetable management process (TTR). The aim of the TTR is to harmonise and improve the European rail timetable planning system in order to considerably increase the competitiveness of rail transport.

The TTR consists of various elements, including better planning of infrastructure capacity allocation (including temporary capacity restrictions) and the introduction of new capacity allocation processes.

The aim is to better meet all market needs and optimise the use of existing infrastructure capacity. For passenger traffic in particular, this will mean earlier availability of the final timetable, enabling earlier and more reliable ticket purchasing for passengers. For the majority of freight traffic, it will mean more possibilities for short-term requests for train paths and therefore more flexibility to better meet customers' needs.

TTR should be fully implemented by the 2025 timetable provided it is supported by the European and national legal framework.
